Planning a destination wedding can be very challenging. You may never have been to that particular resort, or even the country before, and there are a number of variables to consider. But it’s even more challenging when the resort where you are booking isn’t even built yet!! That’s the situation Becky & Herman found themselves in when they decided to trust the Secrets brand and Secrets reputation when they booked their wedding just 2 months after the scheduled resort grand opening.
But, Secrets Akumal really pulled through and surpassed their expectations. There are a ton of great little touches that sets Secrets apart from other resorts — free internet, sunscreen provided free of charge, in addition to the expected great service and gorgeous location, and my favorite feature, the fact that the swim-out pools were more like gigantic hot tubs as opposed to pools — they were great!
Then, of course, there is one amazing feature that you can only find at this Secrets location — go swim just about 20 feet out from the beach and you’ll find yourself right alongside huge sea turtles, and other awesome sea-life as this cove in Akumal is a prime spot for them. Tour groups from all around Riviera Maya bring buses in just north of this resort to experience the same thing you get to experience for free every day of your trip, (and if you get up before the groups get there, you’ll see a lot more than they do!)
And then, of course, not only do you get to enjoy paradise with your friends and family, but there’s the whole wedding thing too!
Becky and Herman had probably one of the nicest set-ups I’ve ever seen at a wedding reception. The DJ’s lighting of the surrounding palm trees really helped set the mood and those overhead lights helped a ton too! I know this extra lighting is an added expense that is easily overlooked when planning a wedding, but they really add a ton to the photos, so if you can spring for them, I strongly suggest it!
Of course, as a photographer, I felt like I only touched on about 10% of what I would have actually liked to do at this resort, but hopefully I’ll return for another wedding soon!
