I've seen a few do-it-yourself, crafty brides in my 12 years of photographing weddings. But
I'll be honest with you, most often do-it-yourself projects can be spotted a mile away
because they look the part. Or at least that was my general opinion until I shot Arlene and
Tricky's wedding at Riu Ocho Rios in Jamaica.
Coming into the wedding, I had worked extensively with the couple as I had been coordinating
travel for their group and was going to be their photographer (and as a result the couple had
to pay me next to nothing for my services), so I had gotten to know them pretty well and knew
Every time I do a destination wedding, I get tons of questions from wedding guests, social media followers, and even resort guests as to how I work.
Unfortunately, the travel industry in general, and specifically, the destination wedding industry is full of bait-and-switch sales techniques. Most people are keen to this tactic and are automatically on the defensive when they hear about a deal that seems too good to be true. So when I try to tell people that the majority of my destination wedding clients literally pay me nothing for me to travel to their resort, stay 3 days, and photograph their...
By now, I've done enough destination weddings to know that this was not just a coincidence at all of them.
For some reason, foreign DJ's at all of my destination weddings tend to automatically assume that Americans love oldies. So much so, that they will play them the entire reception!
Now, I'm not an oldies fan personally, but I'm always up for a good "shout" amongst other favorites at weddings. But, when your entire playlist doesn't seem to make it past 1970, it presents a bit of a problem for your younger guests who just want to hit the club up and party!
Plus, you are in a different...
I learned of Nancy Reagan's passing yesterday and remembered this photo I took in 2004 at her husband's funeral.
I went to the funeral with the intention of photographing this news event to take the photos and begin submitting my portfolio to newspapers, magazines, and photo agencies for a job as a photographer. At the time, I was finishing out my last summer life guarding and was told by most adults that I'd need to get a 'real job' soon (photography was not, and still is not considered a 'real job' by many.... even extended family members think this is my hobby still) but photography was where...
In case you don't already know, in addition to being a photographer for the last 12+ years, I also have been a travel agent for the last 4 years as well! All of my wedding clients now get a FREE wedding album when they book their honeymoon through me, and my destination wedding clients often end up getting my services completely free of charge when they book an entire group's travel with me!
As a result of this added business that I started just because I loved to travel and thought I could help out my existing clients with their honeymoon plans, I've actually started becoming pretty successful...
Planning a destination wedding can be very challenging. You may never have been to that particular resort, or even the country before, and there are a number of variables to consider. But it's even more challenging when the resort where you are booking isn't even built yet!! That's the situation Becky & Herman found themselves in when they decided to trust the Secrets brand and Secrets reputation when they booked their wedding just 2 months after the scheduled resort grand opening.
But, Secrets Akumal really pulled through and surpassed their expectations. There are a ton of great little...
This week, I'm at Riu Ocho Rios in Jamaica where bride and groom Arlene & Tricky have really
taken the whole DIY thing to another level. From designing her own dress, making welcome
bags, invitations, and even making their own suspenders and bow-ties, this wedding had their
signature all over it. Often destination weddings can lose a bit of that personal feel as
everything is "packaged" -- but Arlene and Tricky didn't let that happen with

New in 2016, I'm planning to do a series of video blogs! Figured I'd start with my first
wedding of 2016 from Secrets Resort in Akumal in the Riviera Maya of Mexico. This resort
just opened in November, and as an AmResorts Master Agent, I was excited to get to check
it out with this destination wedding group. Remember, destination wedding groups booked
with Be Vacations get photography free as their thank-you gift for booking their group with
me! Full photo blog will follow later.

A common trend in my recent weddings has been a huge increase in the number of
couples who want to do a "first look." This is when the bride and groom opt to
break tradition and see each other before the ceremony in hopes of being
able to knock out the majority of the 'couples' photos beforehand.
usually done so that they can actually be a part of their cocktail hour afterwards
(or in an effort to just get more 'couples' photos).
I absolutely love being able to get the bride and groom away from the chaos of the day
before the wedding even starts and be able to capture the emotion...
